Our parents and teachers have told us wrong. In children's books we draw pictures of clouds with wind coming from their mouths, we might say that it is 'blowing a gale'. As a consequence we think about wind in unrealistic and inappropriate ways. Wind is NOT pushed. NOTHING is doing the pushing. Wind is caused by VACUUM. Wind is a large mass of air being drawn to a place of low pressure. A distant low pressure area pulls denser air to itself. So for instance a northwest wind is actually a southeast suck.
